In this study, we examined the relationships between leisure activities and health, taking into account self-rated health, functional health, and psychological health. We used a nationally representative sample of 2,028 Korean adults collected in 2011. In the results, the fulfillment level of a main leisure activity among the retired was lower than that among full-time workers. Another finding was that the lower income groups showed the lower qualities of a main leisure activity. Second, the healthiest leisure activity groups were sports activity, volunteer activity, and hobby/culture activity groups out of the nine leisure types. Third, qualities (fulfillment and socialinteraction) of leisure activities had significant positive effects on health. Fourth, both fulfilling and socially-interactive qualities of leisure activities had greater positive effects on self-rated or functional health in the retired and in the housewives. The fulfilling quality of leisure activities had a greater positive effect on all the three dimensions of health in the lowest-income group, compared to the highest-income group. The socially-interactive quality of leisure activities had a greater positive effect on self-rated or psychological health in the lowest-income group. This study provides theoretical implications that leisure activities are closely related to social stratification and the qualities of leisure activities play importance roles in health.
